Decorating With Art In Interior Design

Art breathes life into rooms, giving them character and personality, something that is difficult to achieve with any other type of decoration. A well-chosen piece of artwork can transform the look and feel of a space, creating something truly individual to you. At Hurst + Gillanders, we love to be inspired by art. You may have an existing piece that is the starting point for a particular room scheme or the art may be a finishing touch complementing an existing colour palette. Either way, art is a great inspiration for any redecorating project. There are no rules when it comes to choosing art. Your only guide should be to choose art that you love. At Artdrop London, we only choose pieces that we would hang in our own homes.

Decorating with art is an exciting process as it offers another way to express your personality and for us it is often the key to a successful interior scheme. A well designed and decorated room will look beautiful but it won’t feel finished without art. This could be a contemporary space with vintage art or a traditional space with contemporary art. An element of surprise can bring a lovely element of playfulness to a room.

How an artwork is framed and displayed on the wall can be as important as the artwork itself and can impact the look and feel of the overall space. A gallery wall is a fun way to display a group of smaller paintings, drawings or photos. Larger pieces tend to need a bit more space around them to really get the full impact. For a more classic look, a grid-style format is a lovely way to display a series of prints or drawings and works particularly well in restful spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms. It is also very good at drawing attention to detailed or less bold works.

Art is a wonderful way to inject life into more practical areas such as the kitchen, laundry and cloakroom. It adds something playful and unexpected to these rooms and is a brilliant way to soften the space. The art doesn’t have to be hung and can be leaned against the wall on a shelf or countertop or even a bookshelf, giving it a particularly relaxed feel. Add some treasured objects and plants or layer it with other pieces of art and you can create something really personal and uplifting. Artwork brings a room alive; it injects the room with personality and turns a house into a home.
