CLASSIC EXTENSION
This project involved a rear and side extension as well as an extensive refurbishment of this detached house set in SW London. The brief was to completely reconfigure the layout of the ground floor to suit the family’s current and future needs. The challenge was to add texture and interest to this unassuming 1940s house. The property had very few architectural features and therefore few elements which had to be incorporated into the design. With characteristically low ceilings and a dark interior (despite the south facing aspect) our brief was to create a light and spacious feel making the most of the wonderful lateral space. We chose not to introduce classical features, which would have brought the ceilings down lower, instead developing a contemporary concept with neutral, harmonious tones. A lot of attention to detail was put into creating bespoke joinery to add texture and interest whilst providing the extensive storage needed for this growing family. Smoked oak flooring and a Scandi colour palette were used to increase the connection to the wonderful leafy setting outside.
The planning phase on this project took 6 months with the work itself taking just under a year. Hurst + Gillanders provided full project management services.
